I can has automagz?

« on: July 10, 2008, 05:42:14 PM »

I picked up my first C-3 recently. It's definately a cool gun, and here's my review...

Appearance - Odd says it best. Unnactractive is another good word. Fugly comes to mind. This marker is big and wide. I'm not a fan of the looks, but hey, it's whats inside that counts, right?

Performance - This is where it gets neat. The C-3 doesn't run on CO2 or HPA, it runs on propane or PEP technology and yes, it is safe. There is actually a spark plug in the marker and it does have and electonic gripframe that sets off a spark in the combustion chamber. Yes you heard me right, there is a combustion chamber. It compresses the air and fires the paintball. It's actually an incredibly efficient system. Tippmann Sports claims 50,000 shots out of a 16 oz $3-4 propane cylinder. I haven't had near that much time with mine to verify. That said after you prime the marker it works very well. It is consistant and the velicity does adjust roughly between 240-310 fps. It is a right feed and has a nice integrated sighing system in the reciever. The pump stroke is long for a pump and fairly heavy, but solid.

Maintenance - I'm not wanting to rip this thing apart and so far, it seems very reliable as I've abused it a bit and haven't had any issues. Follow the instructions in the manual for regular maint and you should be fine.

Cons - The fixed barrel thing irritates me, you can't match your barrel/bore and are forced to use their composit barrel. Also as I stated above the pump stroke is long and the marker is large(which it needs to be by design to incorporate the combustion chamber).  It by no means has the refined feel of other comparably priced pumps such as the phantom or even snipers.

Value - I think it's a fair price. For the amount you'll be saving in CO2 and HPA fills it'll pay for itself within a year if you play most weekends.

Overall? Yeah it has some flaws but it IS innovative, it is functional, and it's just plain cool to play with.

If tippmann ever makes a propane powered semi auto gun I will get it without even thinking about it. that is all that is keeping me from the c3.
